Within one doubleheader, it’s the longest of long shots: home runs by Terry Hiebert (2 in 17 years) and Bill Kreykenbohm (4 in 25 years). Chris Girolamo hits only career home run. Hiebert’s comes in the last inning, and is followed by Mark Sarver’s, accounting for two of the three runs which win the game.

Playing third base at dangerous Kenmore Field, Mark Sarver catches a bad hop against his chin, but gets a force out in game one against Cherrydale Glass. In the second game, though, with Cherrydale Glass star Tommy Lee batting, he’s hit in the throat by another bad hop grounder, a la Tony Kubek.

Summer

As a record number of injuries take their toll, ringers abound.
June 22

Ringer Richard White singles twice in debut, as Tools last inning rally beats Little Café 8-7. When White homers in nightcap, he’s signed to a contract despite grossly misjudging the first fly ball hit to him.
July 6

Mike Giglio sits next to ex-Tool Bob Emeritz, playing for the night as a ringer, and a familiar subject comes up. Giglio says, “we’re finally going to catch up to you. Michele’s pregnant.” Emeritz smiles and replies, “no, you’re not, Marti’s pregnant.” Final score: Emeritz 6 kids, Giglio 4.
August 31

Joe Colletta rejoins team after very long absence. For next 2 years uses lame excuses for being late, like “a towel in the eye.”

Barbara Kreykenbohm takes photos, unknowingly giving birth to the annual Tools Musical Slide Show. Tools note that nearly every Thermos batter is named Joe, and thereafter the Thermos are knows as “Team Joe”.
September 6

The funniest moment in Tools history wasn’t expected when a down-hearted team gathered at Fuddruckers after dropping a twin bill to hated Presearch. It’s Scott Bresnahan’s birthday. Coach Sarver surprises the new Tool with a cake. Mike Giglio and Scott Bresnahan surprise the coach by pushing his face into it. Hysterical Tools are practically falling on the floor.
October 4

After worst season start ever, 0-7, Tools catch fire, win 10 of 11 and final 8 for winning record. The comeback sets the stage mentally for the 1990 championships to come.
October 11

Umpire Jayne Saunders gets into fracas with both teams, and walks off field, later saying she was afraid. Tools and Salt Pepper play on without her. She returns for second game. When Mark Sarver tries to calm Jayne, she retorts, “My name is Ump!”

July 25

September 12

After 2-2 start in fall league, Tools start streak and win 11 of next 12 to gain tie for second place with Little Café.
September 26

On a foggy night, Rick Mercer launches an amazing home run that is still rising as it clears the fence, and disappears into the fog. Legend says that the ball never lands. He finishes the game with a walk off 3 run homer to shock Pentagon City Thermos 12-9.
October 27

With a season-ending Saturday make-up, either Tools or Little Café must sweep doubleheader to tie Pentagon City Thermos for 1st place. The pressure is on from the moment The Sheik takes to the mound and sings the national anthem through his bullhorn. Tools have an offensive explosion in game 1, and despite hitting no home runs, score in every inning and coast to a 22-5 win. In game 2, there’s no doubt. Rick Mercer blasts a first inning grand slam homer and Tools win 14-7, heading for a sudden death match with the Thermos. The win is costly, though, as Mercer pops his hamstring and is doubtful for the playoff game.
October 30

Sudden death. Rick Mercer, the designated hitter, can barely walk. Thermos intentionally walk him every time up. His teammates pick him up big time. Mike Giglio blasts 3 run homer in top of first. Thermos counter with 7 in bottom of first. Tools get 5 more in second, but Thermos go quietly. In the third, the Tools run wild, scoring 12 runs and the Thermos are dead. Giglio caps a smashing 21-9 victory with his second homer in the last inning. The Tools win the fall league championship in Arlington’s 2nd toughest division.

July 17

In last Tool at bat, bid for homer caught at fence. Tools get 3 in 7th to win 5-4. Bruce Turner scores winning run as throw home glances off his raised arm. Catcher throws glove, then ball at Turner, benches empty.
July 22

Bruce Turner finishes summer with 17 hits in 18 at bats. With the White-Mercer power combo gone, Tools are eliminated 4-3 when umpire stops game in 6th due to one distant streak of lightning. There’s no more lightning, no thunder, no rain, one huge argument.

But instead of having hit a game-tying homer, he hears the umpire scream "dead ball, batter's out" for stepping out of the box. The next batter singles to load the bases with only one out. Third baseman Mike Sabol snares a hard grounder to his left and fires home for the force and the second out. Mark Bultman leads off season with bloop to left field and runs it into improbable inside-the-park home run, gets four hits for game.  Revette triples in first at bat after missing all of 2009 with broken leg.  Tools come from behind with three runs in last inning to beat Badabing 15-14.  In second game, we score second highest single game run total ever, smashing them 36-5.  Chris Hamm and Craig Hughes both get five hits and five RBI.  Fifty one runs is fourth highest run total ever.
May 12
Mike Gummey hits record five triples in doubleheader.  Tools hit 10 triples over all.
May 12
Ashby Daniels hits walk-off bases loaded single to deep left center beating Spartans 9-8.
May 26
Mike Gummey's triple ties single season record of 10 only half way through season.
June 2
With his 11th triple, MIke Gummey breaks single season record.  He'll finish with 12.  Ben Peden gets 5 RBI and hits homer in 18-8 win over The Johnnies.  Tools start spring season with 11-0-1 record.
June 9
While the Tools suffer first loss of season to Fighting Penguins, Jay Braun ties team record by hitting three straight home runs and gets six RBI.  In second game, Tools rebound from 10-0 deficit for a 12-12 tie and have winning run on second base with just one out but we strand the runner.
June 23
Tools clinch spring league title with a narrow 9-7 win against Mustangs, a team with three women.  It's our 14th win of season and our sixth league championship.
August 25
Craig Hughes pitches a five hitter in 11-1 win over Fireworks Pizza, getting 13 ground ball outs in only five innings.
September 8
Tools get season high 24 hits to smack Jay's Saloon 25-16.  Jay Braun hits two homers for six RBI.

2011
April 20
Nearing his 60th birthday, coach Mark Sarver gets three hits and three RBI to pace 15-5 win over Hosers.
May 25
Coach makes bogus pitching change causing Chris Hamm to uncharacteristically "lose it" and the Tools follow suit, blowing a 8-1 last inning lead to lose 9-8.

June 29
Tools execute five double plays, one in each inning, and short stop Eric Stewart is involved in every one as Tools whip Spider Monkeys in game one 12-1.  Ben Peden blasts his ninth and tenth homer of spring campaign and Jay Braun hits his tenth.  It's the first time a pair of Tools each reach double figures in homers.  Chris Hamm scatters six hits in second game for first career shut out, a 17-0 win.  Tools miss three-peat title by one game.
July 6
Chris Hamm needs only one more out to have pitched the first no-hitter in Tools history.  He induces an easy ground ball to short, but it is booted for an error.  Next batter doubles up left center field alley despite valiant dive by outfielder Ben Peden, breaking up the no-hitter and the shutout.  Tools win playoff opener 13-1.

July 13
As league champion Fighting Penguins play horrendous defense, Tools romp 12-5 to advance to playoff finals.
July 27
Tools win spring playoffs with 11-4 win over Spartans.  Ben Peden leads the way with a homer, triple and double.  Jay Braun gets three hits.
August 24
Tools celebrate 30th anniversary playing in Arlington.  Sarv wears his original uniform, older than many of the current players, yet the pants still fit.  We score in every inning of the doubleheader for a sweep.  Ben Peden homers, triples and singles for six RBI in the nightcap.
September 14
Ben Peden hits three homers in second game for seven RBI in 22-10 win over Mackey's Animals.  He knocks in 10 runs in doubleheader.  Tools score in every inning of doubleheader for second week in a row.
September 21
Tools set record as we score in 32 straight innings.  Streak ends in fourth inning of 14-4 victory over Booth Review.  In second game, Will O'Day hits for the cycle, with his last inning three run inside-the-park homer in the right field corner giving him a career high seven RBI.  Craig Hughes hits three doubles for five RBI.  Outfielder John Revette tries to make diving catch in left center but breaks his hand and is out for year.
October 26
Jesse Johnson blasts a grand slam in his final at bat of game one as the Tools come from behind to beat Bad News Beers 13-11.  Jesse homers in his first two at bats in the second game to make it three in a row to pace a 16-6 win.  Jesse gets 11 RBI in the twin bill, including seven in one game.  The Tools are in first place with a 12-0 record.
November 2
The Bashers end our hopes for a perfect fall season, but we salvage an 11-11 tie to stay unbeaten.  But that streak is on the ropes again in the second game, as we trail 13-10 going into our last at bats.  Jay Braun leads off with a triple.  With one out, Doug Walker singles in Braun.  Jesse Johnson triples to score Walker.  Chris Hamm singles to left to tie the game.  Chris Bailey, not known for his power, triples to right and Hamm scores for an exciting walk-off win.  We're 13-0-1.
November 9
Once again we trail in our last at bats, this time 8-7 vs. Silverbacks.  Mike Sabol, Craig Hughes and Doug Walker single to tie the game.  Chris Hamm announces in the dugout that "the left center fielder is about to get burned" and backs up the talk by blasting a drive over that guy's head for a walk-off double.  Tools score in every inning of second game to build 28-6 lead and win 28-17.
November 16
Our final make-up doubleheader against Badabing, on what would have been the latest date we've ever played, is rained out yet again and with Thanksgiving approaching there is no way to make it up.  The Tools, with a 15-0-1 record, achieve our first unbeaten fall season [nearly matching the spring 2003 squad that went 17-0-1] and win our first fall league title in 21 years.

2012
April18
Eric Stewart hits his first career over-the-fence homer as we crush Badabing 18-3 to start the season.  In game two, the Tools rally with two outs and the bases empty trailing 14-13.  Jay Braun singles, Mike Gummey doubles and Mike Sabol singles them both home for a walk-off win and doubleheader sweep.  We didn't find out until the end of the regular season, but the league had scheduled Badabing to play two extra games and would not count this doubleheader against their record.  It costs us the spring league title as they finish one game ahead.  We protest to the league commissioner to no avail.
April 25
Trailing 6-3, the Tools score 10 in the fourth and six in the fifth to win 19-12.  Jesse Johnson hits one of the longest Tools homers ever, a line drive way beyond the very deep right field fence at Gunston Park.
May 2
Tools set a team record 33 game unbeaten streak with a 17-7 win over Bad News Beers.  We'd trailed 6-2 in the game.  The record during the streak is 31-0-2.  It ends with a 22-10 thrashing at the hands of the Beers in the second game.  John Revette drove in half our runs, getting eight for the doubleheader.  We will win our next eight games, going 39-1-2 during this period.
May 9
A torrential downpour with intense winds buffets Gunston Park but an undaunted umpire named Gerald insists the Tools and Charros will play no matter what.  Field conditions deteriorate quickly making it unsafe to play.  A heated but very wet argument ensues with both coaches failing to get through to Gerald.  Sarv finally sticks his finger in the ump's face, angrily insisting "you're not going to lecture me!"  The field supervisor arrives, screams "what the xxxx?" and sends everyone home.  Sarv has the last word, though, complaining to the league and the umpire's association suspends Gerald for one month.
June 12
Down to the Bashers 8-5 for our last at bats, we rally for four runs.  With the bases loaded and one out, Jay Braun hits a drive that is caught deep in right center field.  Mike Sabol and Ben Peden tag up and both score on the play.  Then, down to our last out, Mike Gummey slashes a triple to right center to tie the game.  After an intentional walk, Doug Walker singles up the middle to give us a 9-8 lead.  Craig Hughes retires the Bashers in order for the win.  In another nail biter, we trail 6-5 in the seventh inning of game two but rally for five runs to win 10-7.
June 20
Our worst doubleheader in two years at the hands of The Fighting Penguins.  Jesse Johnson homers twice for four RBI in the opener but rest of us can't get out of our own way and we lose 16-6.  We never get close in the second game.  As the teams shake hands afterward, the opposing pitcher and catcher -- brothers -- launch a verbal attack on Sarv, viciously cursing the coach because he didn't apologize for happening to hit a ground ball that bounced off the pitcher's leg in game one.  It gets ugly and umpire Hank Kopcial intercedes to calm things.
June 27
Making up the rain out that led to an umpire's suspension, the Tools easily best Charros 14-2 and 10-4 to complete at 15-3 spring campaign.  The standings are posted the next day showing the Tools in first place and Badabing in second with a 14-4 record.  But we didn't know that Badabing played two extra games and the league wasn't counting our sweep of them.  So their record was amended to 16-2 and they were awarded the league title.  The Tools protested vigorously to the league and refused to accept the runner up trophy.
September 26
Having dropped six of our first eight fall games, failing to score in double figures six times, the suddenly resurgent Tools refused to lose, sweeping The Factory and winning our last 10 games for a 12-6 record and third place.
October 17
The Tools are down to our last out with two men on and trailing 10-9.  Coach Mark Sarver, who had struggled at the plate all night, became the oldest Tool ever to win a game when he slashed a single to center field to tie the score and when the outfielder can't handle the ball, Bobby Bilicki scores the winning run all the way from first base.
October 24
Mike Gummey singles home two runs and then Jesse Johnson hits a walk-off single as the Tools come from behind for a 12-11 win against BDNB.

2013
March 28
Mike Giglio shows up at Tools practice after a 20 year absence.  He smacks a line drive off the center field fence, leaving Sarv speechless.  Jesse Johnson rips a BP line drive back through the box, where pitcher Craig Hughes is definitely in the way.  Craig breaks his pitching hand and is lost for the entire spring season.
April 3
In the first at bat of his 15th season with the Tools, Jay Braun blasts the 100th home run of his career, only the second player to achieve that milestone.  Eric Stewart has a perfect night, going eight for eight as the Tools sweep The Factory.  Rookie Matt O'Connell gets his first career hit, a base hit in his third at bat of the first game.
April10
In a nine run second inning against BDNB, Jesse Johnson socks a grand slam homer and Matt O'Connell hits a bases loaded triple.
April17
Will O'Day hits a three run inside-the-park homer as the Tools beat Bashers 14-10.
May1
Matt O'Connell drills his first career home run and it's a walk-off, an opposite field three run job that clears the right center field fence at Virginia Highlands 4 to break a 9-9 tie.  Matt gets six RBI in the game.
May 15
Trailing 5-1, the Tools erupt for 10 runs in the fifth inning, including a three run homer by Ben Peden, and beat Badabing 12-11.
June 19
On the day after his 61st birthday, team co-founder Bill Anhut makes his first appearance in five years, pitching two games and winning the second.  The team applauds him in the dugout afterward.
August 21
Craig Hughes returns to action after missing the spring season with a broken hand and pitches the Tools to a doubleheader sweep of BDNB.  Rookie Jeff Hart singles in first career at bat.
September 11
The Tools score 39 runs, high for the year up to now, drubbing Reiter's Block 19-1 and 20-3.
September 18
Badabing wins opening game, but despite their averaging 19.5 runs per game, Chris Hamm stifles them in the second game, allowing only four runs in a 12-4 win.
September 25
The Tools cut down runners at the plate in consecutive innings.  Left fielder Eric Stewart hits cut off man Matt O'Connell at third base and Matt whirls and throws home to Mark Sarver who applies the tag.  It is Stewart again in the next frame, firing a long throw to the plate that Sarver grabs and makes a tough tag for the putout.  Tools score 15 runs in fifth inning of second game for 25-7 win.  Ben Peden, with a pair of homers, and Jeff Hart each for five for five.  The 43 runs in the doubleheader is, again, a high for year and 13th best ever.
October 2
The most exciting game of the year.  Tools lead Sloppy Joe's 9-0 but two Sloppy rallies put us behind 16-10 with only one turn at bat to go.  Tools put on a fierce rally, loading the bases with nobody out and pouring runners across the plate.  With the deficit down to one run, 16-15, and runners on first and second, Matt O'Connell drives the ball to the fence in straight away center, and both runners score to win the game.  In the second game, Mark Sarver singles a run home and yelps in pain, grabbing his right shoulder.  He stays in the game and in his next at bat, unable to swing, dribbles a ball in front of the plate and pulls his left hamstring trying to beat it out.  In his final at bat, unable to swing or to run, he takes a 3-2 pitch for a walk and then hop skips from base to base as the Tools drive him home station-to-station.  But his season is done.
October 16
The Tools puts on a show, scoring 44 runs in the doubleheader, the 11th highest ever and most for the year, in thrashing Charge the Mound 25-7 and 19-5.  In the second game we score 15 runs in the second inning.
October 23
The Tools score nine in the first, four in the second and nine in the third to grab a 22-6 lead and coast to an easy 22-13 win over a very talented young Cunning Runts team.  The second game starts the same but doesn't finish that way.  The Tools score nine in the first and six in the second to lead 15-0.  Going into the bottom of third we lead 16-3.  Then the Runts finally get unleashed and it isn't pretty.  They score 15 runs to take a 18-16 lead.  In our last at bat, we put runners on second and third with nobody out but only get one home on a sacrifice fly.  Jesse Johnson is cut down at the plate trying to score on a grounder to short with one out.  We lose 18-17.  It turns out to be very costly.  The previously undefeated first place team, CarPool Commodores, lose both ends of a doubleheader on this night, so the one run loss cost the Tools, who were 15-3, a share of the league title.

2014
April 9
Mark Sarver gets 300th "official" career regular season RBI with fourth inning single in game one.  Ben Peden hits for cycle and in game two he homers to score his 300th career run.
April 23

May 28
While the Tools lose twin bill to Fighting Penguins, Ben Peden hits pair of triples and a double in game two for five RBI.
June 4
Jay Braun singles in second inning of game one for 700th career hit.  Mike Gummey's RBI in first inning is 300th of his career.  Second game rained out in third inning.  Two Peden two-run homers are washed away.
June 11
Lightning delays start of game.  Tools win first game but second game rained out in third inning.  Ben Peden hits homer, triple and double for six RBI.
June 18
Will O'Day hits first home run over a fence in his life in game one.  In same game Mark Sarver's fifth inning triple is the 40th of his career and his 500th "official" career hit.  He gets two hits in the same inning.  Chris Hamm scores 600th career run in fourth inning.
June 25
Due to multiple rainouts, Tools scheduled for first Quadruple Header.   We win game 1, ten run ruling Bashers 12-2.  Jay Braun scores 600th career run.  Game 2 is forfeited by Bad News Beers.  We win game 3, ten run ruling Mister Days 15-5.  Ben Peden gets 400th RBI in second inning.  Game 4 vs. Mister Days is rained out and not made up. So much for the Quadruple Header.
July 2 - 16
After dropping playoff game 1 to Bad News Beers 10-3, Tools win three straight games before being eliminated by CarPool 15-8.
September 3
Tools overcome 16-6 deficit to shock Sloppy Joe's 21-16, surging with 12 run third inning rally.  In first game, also won by the Tools, Doug Walker scores 700th career run.
September 24
A Rosh Hashanah romp.  Tools clobber The Factory 23-4.  Matt O'Connell hits for the cycle.  In game two, we trail 12-10 as we bat for the last time.  Brad Moehringer hits lead-off home run, O'Connell singles and Ben Peden hits walk-off two run homer to win the game 13-12.
October 1
Matt O'Connell hits Tools 1,000th regular season home run, a three run blast in the fifth inning of game 1 against Aww Naw at Virginia Highlands 4.  The homer gives us a 10-9 lead but the game ends in a 12-12 tie.  ** Notes on the 1,000th home run:  Our official regular season statistics go back to the fall of 1983, but do not include action from 1981 - spring 1983.  So no doubt there were earlier home runs.  Seventy nine Tools players contributed to the 1,000 home runs, Ken Ferebee getting the most with 154.  We also have hit 215 home runs in tournaments and post-season playoffs, again Ferebee leading the way with 33.
October 29
We score 25 runs in game two, with Brad Moehringer hitting two home runs and a triple to drive in seven runs.  Ben Peden gets a homer and four hits to drive in five runs.  Jeff Hart goes five for five.
November 5
Tools finish year by scoring 39 runs in a sweep of Goon Squad, 19-9 and 20-11.  Tools finish a wet year in which rain outs included three practices, eight double headers and three half double headers.  Matt O'Connell gets four hits and five RBI in game two, extending his 46 game regular season hitting streak.

2015
April1
Retired Tool Bill Anhut pitches first regular season game in five years and leads us to a 19-2, 18-5 sweep of Jay's Saloon.  In the second inning of game 1, Bill singles for his 800th hundred career hit.  It took him long enough.  Drew Mitrisin hits two home runs in game two.
April 29
Drew Mitrisin homers twice for 5 RBI in 20-8 win against Sloppy Joe's.
May 13
Ben Peden tears calf muscle and is lost for balance of spring season but Tools thump CarPool 18-5 to gain split of double header.
May 20
One of the key defensive plays of the year occurs in the last inning and keeps the Tools in first place.  Substitute outfielder Tom Vitlo fields a base hit in right field, hits relay man Will O'Day who fires a perfect peg to the plate where Mark Sarver makes the tough tag to save a 6-5 win over Sharp Seat.
May 20
A third inning single up the middle in game two by Matt O'Connell sets a new regular season hitting streak of 58 games, breaking the record of Ben Peden.  The Tools beat Sharp Seat 19-10.  Matt's regular season streak will extend to 72 games in a row.
June 10
Brad Moehringer becomes the first Tool to blast two grand slam home runs in one game as we crush Badabing 18-3.  Brad also hit a triple and single and ges 9 RBI, one short of the team record.
June 17
Matt O'Connell sets a new overall consecutive game hitting streak, counting playoffs, of 63 games with a first inning single up the middle in game 1 as we beat Bad News Beers 13-8.  HIs overall streak will reach an astonishing 84 games.
June 17
The Tools win our 8th regular season league title as Mike Sabol rips a last inning walk-off single to beat Bad News Beers 19-18.
July 1 and July 15
The Tools, having split our first two post-season playoff games, seek to avoid elimination.  However, CarPool builds an early 6-2 lead and are still batting in the top of the second when rain suspends play to be resumed where we left off.  We are postponed again on July 8.  When play finally resumes on July 15 three Tools starters and the coach are away on vacation.  CarPool continues to rally and by the third inning are leading 11-1.  Pitcher Craig Hughes then tosses 5 shut out innings as we battle back to tie the game.  It goes to extra innings and we lose 13-12 in 9 innings.  Mike Gummey, an outstanding Tools infielder for 12 years, ends his career as he moves away.
August 26
After losing the first game 14-9, the Tools stun CarPool 20-2 with a 25 hit attack that involves only three extra base hits, all doubles.  Chris Hamm stops the CarPool offense, yielding only 7 hits.
September 2
The largest run production of the year, as the Tools crush Last Call 21-13 and 20-6.  It starts poorly, as Chris Hamm, discombobulated by a strenuous hike of the Grand Canyon, faces 7 batters and walks 6 of them.  Matt O'Connell makes his first Tools pitching appearance and stabilizes things, making way for a Tools offensive onslaught featuring two homers and 5 RBI by Drew Mitrisin and a 3 run homer by Brad Moehringer.  O'Connell pitches us to another win and Mitrisin gets 5 more RBI to reach 10 for the twinbill.

September 9
Coach Mark Sarver celebrates his 30th anniversary as Tools coach and has a big night with three line drive base hits, two RBI and two runs.  Sarv scores all the way from first base on a double, starts the winning rally as the Tools come back from a 13-3 deficit to win game one 16-14 against Update Sundays and tweaks his hamstring muscle making an over the shoulder catch of a foul pop.

September 23
After winning the first game, Tools trail Badabing in the night cap 8-5 as we bat for the final time.  We rally and put four runs across the plate.  With two runners on base, Ben Peden singles up the middle to tie the game.  When the outfielder boots the ball, another run scores and we win 9-5.
October 7
Craig Hughes in top form as he holds Sloppy Joe's to six hits and we win game one 14-2.  But in the second game we trail 12-2, then 15-5.  We fight back, with 4 in the 4th - Brad Moehringer blasting a 3 run homer -- then 5 more in the 6th to get within a run, loading the bases with only one out.  We strand the runners.  But in the 6th we win it.  After we load the bases again, Doug Walker singles up the middle to tie the game and Jeff Hart drills a long base hit over the left fielder's head to win it 16-15.
October 14
In game two we clobber Bad News Beers 24-13.  Drew Mitrisin hits a record-tying 11th home fall home run, gets 4 RBI.
October 21
With league title on the line, we start with only 8 players and fall behind CarPool Commodores 5-1.  We creep back to grab a 6-5 lead but Commdores tie it 6-6 in the 7th.  Craig Hughes leads off our 7th with a single, advances to second on a tag up after the second out is made on a long fly ball to right, then scores on Hart's base hit.  It's our third walk-off win of the fall.  In the 2nd game we lead early on 7-5. With 2 outs in the third inning, we get 13 straight hits to score 12 runs.  We win 25-7, our highest single game total of the year.  It's our 10th straight win, and after defending a 1 game league lead for five weeks, we win our 9th regular season league title.  Jeff Hart goes 8 for 9 to set new single season records with a .778 batting average and 49 hits.  In game one Drew Mitrisin hits his 12th home run, breaking Ken Ferebee's record that had stood since 1999.

June 1
Ben Peden hits a home run, triple and double for 5 RBI in a 17-7 win vs. Show Me Dem Mitts.                                                                                                              June 8
Tools rebound from a 14-1 deficit with consecutive 8 run rallies to lead 17-16 against First Down Smashbombs but lose 18-17 on a walk-off hit.  In the second game, also a slug fest, it is the Tools getting the 19-18 walk-off victory on a single by rookie Sam Wallach.
June 22
Tools clinch 10th league title by by winning the first game of what would be a doubleheader sweep of Badabing.  Pitcher Craig Hughes makes put outs at both home plate and third base in the same inning, an unprecedented defensive play.  Second baseman Sam Wallach runs almost to the right field line to catch a pop fly then whirls and throws to third, nailing a runner who tagged up and tried to advance.
July 6
In the post-season playoffs opener, the Tools win a see-saw battle with First Down Smashbombs 14-13 when Craig Hughes grounds a single up the middle to score Mike Sabol with the winning run.
August 31
For the second time this season, Ben Peden homers, triples and doubles, this time for 4 RBI, but the game against Update Sundays ended in a 12-12 tie.  Rookie Chris Patterson, playing only his second game, hit a bases loaded triple to give the Tools a temporary lead.
September 21

October 5
Having retired in 2008, Tools co-founder Bill Anhut answers our cry for pitching help and agrees to stay with us for the rest of the season.  He pitches six games and is as graceful and effective as ever.  He even hits for a.533 batting average.        October 12
Tools 1-8-1 record is the worst start in our 36 year history.                               November 9
The Tools win our second doubleheader by forfeit in a row to finish with a much-improved 7-10-1 record.  The night is historic for another reason -- the Chicago Cubs win the World Series for the first time in 108 years.

June 28
Trailing 7-3, Tools explode for 10 runs in fourth to stun CCSP Epstein 15-12 for playoffs win.
September 20
A titanic doubleheader battle with Sports Pub rivals, CCSP-Epstein.  In game one the Tools fall behind 6-0, then have five, three and two run rallies to take 10-9 lead but lose 11-10 on a walk-off hit.  The second game was our most exciting in years, with eight lead changes.  The Tools get 27 hits and score in every inning yet get the 20-19 walk-off win when Mike Sabol walks with the bases loaded.  Ben Peden gets five hits, two RBI, Jay Braun four RBI and Sam Wallach four hits.
September 27

November 15
This is the latest date the Tools have ever played.  It's Jay's Saloon again but this time we get to the right field -- Jennie Dean!  Still, after building a 11-3 lead we suffer a shocking 14-13 loss in game one.  But we end the year on an up note by building a 10-2 second game lead and holding it for a 14-7 win.

2018
April 4
A horrible start to the season against CCSP-Epstein.  In the opener we trail 13-3 and put on a furious last inning rally, scoring nine runs but with the tying and winning runs on base, Ben Peden is called out for stepping on the plate as he grounds to second.  We lose 13-12.  In the second game we lead 11-4 but when CCSP-Epstein puts on its own furious last inning rally, we help them with three errors.  The two outcomes virtually duplicate our experience against the same team last year on April 12, 2017.
April 11
Doug Walker becomes the first Tools to reach 1,000 career regular season hits.  Our 30 year veteran lines a single to center just to the right of second base in the fifth and last inning against Jay's Saloon at Jennie Dean Field.  Umpire Hank Kopcial stops the game, walks to the pitching rubber and presents the ball to Doug.  Games ends in a 9-9 tie after we overcome an 8-1 deficit.
May 2
We thrash frequent league champion Hopslammers for the first time, 18-7.  Drew Mitrisin starts the romp with a three run homer n the first.  Ben Peden hits a grand slam home run in the fourth and gets five RBI in all.
May 9
Drew Mitrisin socks a three run homer for the third game in a row, then homers for the fourth game in a row as the Tools sweep Canna Corn.  Doug Walker plays his 700th regular season game in nightcap.
May 30
Hapless Badabing jumps to 12-1 lead, then pitcher Chris MacDonald shuts them down for the next four innings.  The Tools roar back with four runs in second, eight in third and five in fourth for an amazing 18-12 win.  The onslaught continues in game two as we get four, one, nine, seven and five run rallies on the way to a rollicking 26-2 win.
June 13
A barn burner ... we overcome a 12-4 deficit as Chris MacDonald pitches four shut-out innings while we score 15 runs to lead 19-12.  Warning Track Power rallies for six in last at bats but leaves the tying and go-ahead runs on base.  Mark Sarver shows up from a funeral to coach the second game in his best suit, something he's done a couple of times before.  As on those occasions, the Tools rally for a come from behind win, scoring four runs in the seventh to lead 6-5 and stifling an opposing rally.
August 8
The second-seeded Tools are in the playoffs finals with a 3-0 record.  Our opponents are the number 1 seed, Hopslammers.  The teams had tied for the best record at 12-5-1 but they won the tie-breaker.  Multiple rain-outs push this game off for so long that while it is being played Coach Sarver is floating in his father's swimming pool in Arizona.  The Tools grab a 6-0 lead but Hopslammers gets six to tie things up.  We score two unearned runs to lead 8-6, then get another pair to lead 10-6.  Hopslammers attacks in the top of the sixth and scores five times to tie us again at 12-12.  Drew Mitrisin hits a one-out double and two walks load the bases.  Ben Peden flies out to left center and Mitrisin tags and scores to give us a walk-off win and our fifth spring post-season playoffs title.
August 29
After losing the fall opener to Hopslammers 21-14 it looks like a twin-bill loss is in the offing as we fall behind 11-2 in game two.  Instead we send 17 men to the plate in the third and score 12 runs to lead 14-11.  We yield only one run in the final two innings for a big 14-12 win.  Drew Mitrisin hits his fifth three-run home run of 2018 and knocks in five runs.
October 3
Terrence Dolan hits a long drive to left center at Jennie Dean Field that hits the top of the fence yet falls back onto the field for a triple.
October 10
Chris Hamm, in his 20th Tools season, gets a walk-off single to left to beat Warning Track power 12-11.  In the second game Terrence Dolan and Ben Peden sock back-to-back solo home runs.
October 24
On the verge of a 7-5 win over CCSP-Epstein, a two-out fly ball to left field is dropped and they score five runs to snatch a 10-7 lead.  We stage a two-out rally of our own, getting one run and put the tying runs on base but a hard line out to short ends it.  We crush them 18-3 in game two.  In the third inning, Jeff Hart tags up from third base on a line drive out to short stop ... and scores!
November 12 and 14
Our final four games are rained out and with no time left for make-ups, we finish in second place, just one game behind the league winners who benefited from four straight forfeit wins against two of the league's best teams.

2019
April 10
An explosive offense shows what it can do, as the Tools jump out to 9-0 and 8-0 leads to sweep a tough new team in our league, Girthworms.  We win 15-4 and 17-11.  Drew Mitrisin slugs three home runs and gets nine RBI in the twinbill.
April 17
The demise of perennial champion Hopslammers is foreshadowed by a stunning 22-7 Tools victory.  Terrence Dolan knocks in six runs and he and Sam Wallach get four hits.
April 24
The Tools offense erupts in game two for our highest run production of the year, winning 27-10.  Drew Mitrisin socks two homers, Terrence Dolan gets five hits and Ben Simon gets four hits and drives in three runs.  This starts a nine game Tools winning streak that will land us in first place with two games to go.
May 1
Terrence Dolan hits a grand slam home run and notches 10 RBI in the doubleheader victories against Jay's Saloon.  Ben Peden gets five RBI in game two.
May 15
Sam Wallach sets a regular season hitting streak of 73 games, breaking Matt O'Connell's record. His streak will reach 75 games before it was stopped on May 22.
                            May 29

It is the last night of spring campaign and the Tools need one win in the doubleheader against Girthworms.  Sarv is convinced to go for the seven home limit for the first time and immediately regrets that decision.  The Tools are humiliated in game one, traililng 13-3 and 22-6 before losing 22-10.  In the second game, now do or die, we fall behind 11-1.  We then make one of our greatest comebacks,  The Tools score five runs in the third with Drew Mitrisin hitting a two run homer.  We trail 12-6 as we bat In the bottom of the fourth.  Chris MacDonald homers, Kelly Heath bats with the bases loaded and knocks in two runs with a hit.  Sam Wallach singles in a run and Jeff Hart hits a sacrifice fly to tie the game 12-12.  We already had used four of our seven home runs in this slugfest.  The 3-4-5 batters come up, and one after the other, Mitrisin, Terrence Dolan and Ben Peden launch massive home runs to grab a 15-12 lead.  Girthworms short stop, realizing we had reached our home run limit with a couple of innings to go says "that was really stupid".  But Sarv, who usually rails against solo jobs, knows a team statement when he sees one -- having come back, the Tools are not going to let this one get away.  In the top of the sixth we lead 16-12 and Girthworms starts with a solo homer.  With one out and a man on second, their number three batter, who had hit three straight homers, blasts another long drive to left center.  But Dolan catches it with his back to the fence.  Inexplicably the runner on second tags up and Terrence makes a perfect throw to nail him at third for the final out.  The Tools have won our 11th league championship.
June 12
After hitting two home runs in the playoffs, Drew Mitrisin leaves the Tools to move back home.  In fewer than six full years he hit 55 long balls in regular season play, fifth all time.
September 25
Jeff Hart hits safely for the 74th straight game, breaking Sam Wallach's recently established record.  The streak will reach 80 games in 2019, carrying over to the 2021 season.
October 2

After losing our first three fall games, the Tools have won seven in a row and eight of nine to climb the standings.  But Super Feet Sluggers has too large a lead and we finish 13-5 in second place.
October 9

The Tools say goodby to legendary Jennie Dean Field, where we have played more often than anywhere else, 552 games with a sterling record of 344-194-14.  After fighting Super Feet Sluggers to a 13-13 tie, we lose our final game there 15-14.  A new Jennie Dean Field will be constructed.  Sarv had organized the adult softball community to save the field and played a role in the new design.

2020
No Softball Due to the Pandemic

What would have been the Tools 40th season playing in Arlington does not happen.  The spring season is cancelled and when the fall season is played, like about half of the teams, we opt not to play to stay safe.

2021
April 21

The Tools begin our 40th season, fully masked against COVID-19 but grateful to be together again and playing the game we love.  Ironically in this first game our young opponents are playing together for their very first time, yet after a Tools base-running mistake changes the complexion of the game they beat us 16-13.  Fortunately we offset the defeat with a 12-5 second game win.                                                                                                                May 5
Jeff Hart gets 10 RBI in a doubleheader split with Jay's Saloon, five in each game.
May 19
Five Tools rallies deal eventual league champion Super Feet Sluggers their first loss of the season, a 17-9 pasting.  Jay Braun becomes the Tools all time leader in runs scored.  He will finish the year with 779.
June 9
Mark Sarver celebrates his 70th birthday by playing for the first time since pre-pandemic.  He becomes a six decade player in Arlington and a 40 year player with the Tools, not to mention becoming the first active Tool to collect Social Security.  Ten Tools alumni surprise Sarv either at the field or Sports Pub, including four players and a wife from the original 1981 Tools.
June 16
With pitcher Chris MacDonald away, the Tools yield 13 walks in one game but we battle Super Feet Sluggers until their pitcher beat us on a three run walk-off homer, 15-14.
June 30
After winning the first game against The AFGs to advance our record to 8-9, lightning strikes and the skies open up with a downpour to cancel the second game, leaving us with our first losing spring season since 1999.                                                                                             July 7
In our second playoff game, the four-seeded Tools stun number one seed Super Feet Sluggers by breaking a 9-9 tie with a four run seventh, then getting the last three hitters in their line-up to fly out routinely to left.
September 8
It was like old times as the Tools easily sweep Jay's Saloon 15-5 and 20-9.  In the opener Andrew Klang homers twice for five RBI.  In the nightcap Ben Peden homers and gets five RBI and the Tool unleash a blistering 26 hit attack.
                                                    September 15
The Tools lose the opener on Yom Kippur, per usual, blowing a 10-4 lead, then have usual second game comeback scoring six runs in the sixth inning.  Chris Hamm's walk-off sacrifice fly wins it 16-14.                                                                                                               September 29
Jeff Hart singles to left center in his second at bat vs. Badabing at Virginia Highlands 4, reaching the seemingly unachievable, a 100 game hitting streak in regular season play.  The streak had begun on April 5, 2017 and lasts nearly four full seasons.  Jeff goes hitless in the second game against Badabing and the streak ends.
                                     October 10
Rookie Andrew Klang blasts a home run for a record 11th straight game, his 15th of the fall season, also a record breaking the mark set by Drew Mitrisin.

November 10                                                                                                                              Mike Sabol ends his 12 year Tools career going two for two with a RBI in a 15-8 loss to Head Hunters.  He finishes with 479 hits (11th), 63 doubled (tied 10th), 276 RBI (13th) and 367 runs (12th) and 309 games (10th).

2022                                                                                                        April 13                                                                                                                                      The rejuvenated Tools swept our season-opening doubleheader with a pair of three run last inning rallies to defeat Head Hunters 14-13 and 12-11 on a surprisingly warm April evening at Virginia Highlands 3.  It was an exciting night for the newest Tools.  Andy Zimmerman had three first game hits including a walk-off game winner and showed superb range at short.  John Frauenheim homered over the left field fence in his official first career at bat.  [He went two for six as a ringer in fall 2021]  Then John joined the Annals of Oddity by blasting three more shots over the fence -- each one of them an automatic out for violating the three home run limit.  Veteran Matt Bailey socked three homers in the twinbill, good for nine RBI.

April 27                                                                                                                                    The Tools offense kicked into high gear at little Virginia Highlands 4 as we fought two intense battles against rival Badabing, beating them twice by identical 17-15 scores.  We got 42 hits in just 10 turns at the plate.  Jeff Hart, a career inside-the-park home run specialist, stunned all by hitting three over-the-fence homers, two to left field in the first game and an opposite field three-run drive to right center in the second.  Matt Bailey may have saved the first win with a tumbling, backwards catch in deep left field.  In game one ringer Ethan Bailey, playing catcher, is flattened by a runner at the plate, knocking the ball out of his glove and cutting the bridge of his nose.  Nemesis umpire Gerald calls runner out.  In game two our batter John Frauenheim shanks a dribbler off the plate and due to an allegedly bad route towards first base is ruled out for interference.

May 4                                                                                                                                  Twenty three year veteran Chris Hamm becomes third Tool to reach 900 career hits.  Tool crush 20-7 then need walk-off hit by Matt Bailey to win squeaker 4-3.

May 18                                                                                                                                  Despite having only nine players, Tools crush Action Deuce 15-5 and 19-2.  Ben Peden goes eight for eight to increase his batting average to .857 after 10 games.  Andrew Klang launches grand slam in opener, his seventh longball of the spring.  Pitcher Chris MacDonald yields only five hits in game two.

May 25                                                                                                                                Enjoying a bye week, it's Bowling Night at Bowlero Lanes in Arlington.  Our best bowlers complain about the unwaxed lanes and underperform.  Ben Simon has high game of 167.  Ben Peden is most consistent but Mark Sarver, picking up a ball for the first time in 14 years, surprises all turning in the 3rd, 2nd and 3rd highest scores among the eight Tools.

June 1                                                                                                                              Tools win seventh straight, jumping eventual league champion Super Feet Sluggers with a 10 run first and crushing them 18-7.  In second game we fall behind 14-2 but rally furiously, game ending with two on base and tying run on deck, final score 17-13.

June 8                                                                                                                                Chris Hamm ends his 23 year Tools career as we beat Jay's Saloon 11-10 and tie them 10-10.  One of our greatest players, "Hammer" finishes with 904 hits (3rd), 83 home runs (4th), 1,633 total bases (4th), 715 RBI (4th), 749 runs (3rd) and 579 games (3rd).

June 15                                                                                                                              Bashers intentionally walk Ryan Krepp to load the bases with no outs and Ben Simon delivers a single for a 7-6 walk off win.  We win second game more easily 17-6.

June 20                                                                                                                                The rebuilt Tools (#2) and perennial champion Super Feet Sluggers (#1) fight like heavyweights in a match-up between undefeated playoff teams.  We lose 20-19 in a game of only 3-1/2 innings.

August 24                                                                                                                             Our 41st anniversary, marked by twin losses to Super Feet Sluggers, is remembered only by the feat of their coach/pitcher Tony.  The league's most feared hitter with a tomahawk swing that often puts spin on a ball, hit a long high foul out of play on the left field line at Gunston Park.  The ball struck the light tower column, dropped down and bounced off the top of the high cyclone fence along the left field line, turn left and bounced off the top of the fence again!  Never to be duplicated.

August 31                                                                                                                              Tools rally from 10-6 deficit to win second game in walk-off when John Frauenheim's long drive to left is lost in lights (or darkness) by Badabing's normally reliable left fielder and drops in for a double.

September 7                                                                                                                            Trailing 10-6 in last at bats vs. Jay's Saloon, Tools rally and John Frauenheim's homer ties game.  In bottom half we execute 5-4-3 double play to end game and preserve tie.

September 21                                                                                                                          With 10 runs in the fourth and nine in the fifth, Tools rip Dirty Mike and the Boys 22-5 to complete sweep.  Andrew Klang knocks in eight runs.

October 12                                                                                                                         Tools debut at new Jennie Dean Field.  Having influenced its location and design, coach Mark Sarver pulls rank to lead off but Super Feet Slugger pitcher Tony snags his bid for a hit up the middle and throw him out.  We drop both games.

October 26                                                                                                                       Back at Jennie Dean Field, Tools open with a 16 run first inning, our greatest rally in 15 years.  Our first give batters through first three innings, go 15 for 15, scoring 15 runs and driving in 14.  They were Andy Zimmerman, Jeff Hart, Sam Wallach, Terrence Dolan and Andrew Klang.  Klang has a world class night -- becomes second Tool to hit two grand slam homers in same game and follows up with two three run homers in game two, good for 15 RBI.  This barrage is interrupted only by a walk, effectively giving him a home run in four consecutive at bats.

2023                                                                                April 12                                                                                                                                    The Tools open our 42nd campaign in Arlington with two easy wins over Badabing.  Chris MacDonald pitches a four-hit 10-0 shutout, then yields eight hits and walk for a 12-2 win.  Power comes from sources old and new.  Rookie outfielder Rett Richey smacks a three run homer in his first game, with four hits in five at bats.  Jay Braun kicks off his 23rd season with a three run homer, career long ball #122.  His three hits give him 987.

April 26                                                                                                                                  The Tools battle back twice to sweep a thrilling doubleheader vs. Dirt Bags, overcoming a 7-3 deficit to win 11-8 and a 9-5 deficit to win 13-12.  After only two weeks, we are the league's only unbeaten team at 4-0.  Rett Richey launches three run homer in opener.  In the middle of Dirt Bag's six run game two rally, Matt Bailey probably saves the day by nailing runner at the plate with a peg from right center.

May 3                                                                                                                                        In a night of large rallies, the Tools go to 6-0 beating Head Hunters 15-14 and 21-11.  We rally for six runs twice in the first game and tally seven runs twice and six runs once in the second game.

May 10                                                                                                                                Andrew Klang belts two homers for eight RBI as we crush The Pigeons 19-9.  Sam Wallach gets 400th career hit.  Trailing 9-1 in the nightcap, we come all the back to gain a 10-10 tie.  Our record now is 7-0-1.

May 17                                                                                                                                           We advance to 9-0-1, sweeping Don Tito's Cardiac Cavs 18-8 (Klang six RBI) and 12-11.  In game two, opposing runner standing on third catches liner against his chest with both hands, then tosses ball into foul territory.  Umpire rules batter safe at first, ignoring Sarv's argument that runner interferes with play.

May 24                                                                                                                                      Tools crush Super Feet Sluggers 22-5 with 30 hits and last inning 11 run rally, bringing us a step closer to league title with a 10-0-1 record.  We drop the nightcap for our first loss.

May 31                                                                                                                                  Matt Bailey second game grand slam home caps 16-4, 18-5 thumping of Badabing.  We clinch tie for league title with 12-1-1 record.

June 14                                                                                                                                    Although not at our best, we sweep Dirt Bags 12-9 and 9-6 for a 14-1-1 record.

July 10                                                                                                                                    Tools win 12th regular season league championship in a split with Head Hunters, winning 15-11 and losing 19-11 to finish 15-2-1.  We win the title by four games.  Mark Sarver becomes seventh Tool with 1,000 total bases with a fifth inning walk.

July 12                                                                                                                                    Trailing 10-6 in bottom of seventh in playoff opener, the Tools put eight runners in a row on base without making an out.  Andrew Klang hits three run homer in middle of barrage.  With the bases loaded Matt Bailey hits long drive that drops in front of left field fence for a very long single and a shocking 11-10 win.

July 19                                                                                                                                    Rett Richey grand slam paces a 14-10 win over Super Feet Sluggers to put us in the playoffs finals.

July 26                                                                                                                                    Terrence Dolan smacks two homers for seven RBI and Andrew Klang hits grand slam.  Tools lead Super Feet 15-12 in last inning, on verge of title, but we make five errors to blow the game 19-15.  Sarv tells despondent, sullen Tools squad that we've often dropped the first game when we only need to win one, but that we have won the second game every time.  That's just what we do now, opening with six runs, then grabbing a 15-10 lead in the fourth.  This time we hold the lead, Chris MacDonald ceding just two runs in Super Feet's last four turns at bat.  Jay Braun blasts a pair of homers for seven RBI and Andrew Klang hits a three run long ball.  We win 18-12 for our fifth spring playoffs championship.

August 30                                                                                                                                Offense opens fall season with explosive salvo, scoring 11 runs with a grand slam by John Frauenheim before making an out.  After coasting to 16-4 win over Jay's Saloon, offense inexplicably goes to sleep in game two, falling behind 10-0.  We do wake up, just not quite enough, posting pair of four runs rallies with three run homer by Andrew Klang but lose 14-12.  It may have ended differently but league's chief umpire rules a catch of a lined smash by Klang near left field foul line.  We think ball is trapped but it kills rally.  Mark Sarver unofficially plays his 800th regular season game (counting 36 from early Tools history that are not in official all-time statistics).

September 6                                                                                                                              Jay Braun is second Tool to reach 1,000 career hits as he lines fifth inning lead-off single to right center in 19-2 drubbing of Badabing.  This fuels nine run rally against depleted opponent with only eight players..  Braun gets two more hits in game two, an 11-7 win.

September 13                                                                                                                            We split with Diamond Donks, winning 13-7 as Rett Richey goes four for four with homer, double and five RBI, then losing 13-7 despite Terrence Dolan's grand slam and five RBI.

September 20                                                                                                                          Despite playing with nine players, Tools split with Super Feet Sluggers, losing 10-6 but rebounding to edge them 10-8.  Ben Peden's second inning RBI single in game two is his 900th career hit.

September 27                                                                                                                        Worst night of year as Head Hunters clobbers us 28-14 and 17-11.  Only high point is John Frauenheim's two homer, five RBI performance in game one.

October 4                                                                                                                            Tools don't hit our best but come through in clutch to grab pair of big wins from The Pigeons at Jennie Dean Field.  We overcome 5-1 deficit in opener with five runs in fifth and three in sixth to win 9-7 behind solid pitching from Chris MacDonald and a nifty 4-6-3 double play -- Zimmerman to Simon to Peden.  Trailing 4-0 in third inning of game two, we unleash some offense to battle back for narrow 11-10 win.  Kyle Sisolak pitches seven strong innings, Ryan Krepp makes sensational sliding catch of fly ball on left field line and Andrew Klang fires laser from right center to zap runner at plate to end rally in sixth.

October 11                                                                                                                          Thirteen run second inning (homers by Frauenheim and Richey) powers us to 23-12 beating of Walk Kings.  Then we stop hitting and lose 14-5.

October 18                                                                                                                        Little  effort goes into 13-3, 16-5 doubleheader loss to The Pigeons.  In last three games, we score only 13 runs in 17 innings.

October 25                                                                                                    Jay Braun slugs two run homer in second inning at Gunston Park and becomes first Tool to achieve 2,000 total bases (actually 2,001).  In closing twin bill, Tools finally get offense on track.  We score 10 runs in first three innings for game one 11-5 win over Walk Kings, Zimmerman, and Klang also homering.  Coach is convinced to play last game with five homer limit instead of three.  We hit six to their five, two by Frauenheim, one each by Zimmerman, Braun, Richey and MacDonald.  Frauenheim and Richey get five RBI apiece.  But late in game two Tools players purposely hit over-the-fence outs in scoreless inning, probably costing us 19-18 loss.  We end with disappointing 9-9 record.

2024

April 10

Rookies Noah Cerrud-Osmer and Joe Coopersmith make their debut.  They are first Tools to be 50 years younger than the coach.  Cerrud-Osmer hit a mammoth two run homer high over Gunston Park's left center field fence for his first career hit.  Coopersmith, whose first hit came in game one, hit a two run homer over the left field foul pole in game two and with the Tools barely holding the lead 12-11, Cerrud-Osmer hit a three run long ball to seal the win.

April 17

Noah Cerrud-Osmer homers for the third game in a row to start his career.

April 24

Tools sock five homers to beat Super Feet Sluggers 17-10, gaining split at Gunston Park.  Noah Cerrud-Osmer continues to rake, going seven for seven with a pair of homers and a double.  Through his first six Tools games, he's hitting .789 with five homers, four doubles, 12 RBI and 14 runs.

May 1

Tools eke out 7-6 win over The Pigeons when coach Mark Sarv points out that they have batted out of order and up Hank Kopcial rules an out that kills a bases loaded rally.

May 8

Tools stomp Wet Bandits 23-4 with Noah Cerrud-Osmer crushing a pair of three run homers and getting seven RBI, then we edge them 9-6.  Pitcher Chris MacDonald yields five hits and zero earned runs in the field game

May 22

Sam Wallach's wife and two kids attend first Tools games.  Sam is up to the moment, lining a three run homer over the left field fence at Virginia Highlands 3.  But at that moment his wife is behind the stands changing their daughter's diapers and they miss it.  It was hilarious.

June 26

When Ben Peden leaves the dugout to use the restroom as the Tools comes to bat, nobody is concerned.  Then the Tools load the bases with two out and it's Ben's turn to bat, but he hasn't returned.  Coach Mark Sarver realizes he'll have to pinch hit and the elder statesman works a full count before lining a RBI single to right.  When he gets to first base, there's Ben newly arrived in the first base coaching box, a sheepish grin on his face.

July 31

Ryan Krepp gets three singles in a row and it's good for a career high six RBI, leading the Toolstoa 20-10 playoff win against Wet Bandits.

September 4

Jay Braun breaks the Tools career hit record of 1,014 held by Doug Walker.  He matches Doug with a fourth inning home run at Barcroft 4 in a 17-12 win over Jager Bombers.  Then he passes him with a first inning single in game two.  He sets a new mark of 1,016 with another single in the third inning.  It is the last time Jay will play in 2024.  Meanwhile, the final score of the Tools second game win is "approximately" 17-7.  That's because the Tools, in the absence of their stat-minded coach, manage to forget to record the last inning.  Six Tools come to the plate before reaching the 10-run mercy rule, but the coach has to make educated guesses as to what each batter does, thus skewing the stats a bit.

October 9

Tools begin a historic offensive onslaught, scoring 42 runs in sweeping Dukes 17-12 and 25-18.  Andrew Klang homers and gets five RBI in first game.  Tools get 30 hits in night cap, with homers by Rett Richey (five RBI), Noah Cerrud-Osmer (four hits, three RBI) and Andrew Klang (four hits, four RBI).  Kyle Sisolak goes five for five with three RBI.

October 23

Tools rip Badabing 20-15 and 31-7.  In the second game they get 37 hits, possible a record.  The 51 runs in a twin bill and 31 runs in a game are the highest in 14 years. Our 18 run inning in game two is fourth most all time.  Oddly, those games were against Badabing, too.  Sam Wallach for eight for eight (four RBI, six runs).  Rookie Neil Abramowitz goes seven for eight and in the second game homers and doubles twice, good for six RBI.  Ryan Krepp has first five for five game.

October 30

The offensive explosion continues as Tools sweep Last Call 22-16 and 19-1.  The Tools score 134 runs in the last six games, an unprecedented total.  They notch 154 hits, an average of 25.67 per game.  Andy Zimmerman goes seven for seven so far has had 10 hits in a row.  Noah Cerrud-Osmer hits two three run homers in game one.  In the last inning of game two, Last Call has a runner on first with one out.  The batter lofts a high pop over second base and infielders Andy Zimmerman and Joe Coopersmith converge just a few feet to the third base side of the bag.  One says "let it drop" and the ball plops to the turf.  Zimmerman then picks it up and, as the confused runner breaks from first and stops, steps on second and throws to first for a game-ending double play.  Ironically, Chris Hamm, our great second baseman for 20 years, tries that ploy of letting the ball drop a few dozen times and never once is a double play completed.

November 7

Andy Zimmerman gets a RBI single to left center in the first inning of game two at Quincy Park for a record-tying 19th hit in a row.  He strikes out swinging on next at bat, and not knowing where he stands as to the record asks the coach how many he has (19) and what the record is (19) and is chagrined as his teammates hoot.  Tools turn three double plays in game two, even though we lose 18-17 to Kylie's Cakes.  The first was 6-4-3 (Zimmerman to Coopersmith to Peden).  The other two were 1-4-3 (Richey to Coopersmith to Peden).

November 13

This ties the latest date the Tools have played.  It is cold but the bats are hot.  We end our season with an onslaught against old rival Jay's Saloon, drubbing them 20-1 and 32-0.  Fifty two runs in a doubleheader and 32 in a game each tie for third best ever.  We had 37 hits and 52 total bases in game two, exactly matching our output when we scored 31 runs on October 23.  Ryan Krepp gets his first career home run in game one, an inside the parker good for three RBI. It is somewhat disputed in the dugout by a few who think an outfielder muffed the hit but the coach doesn't see that.  In game two the Tools lead 32-0 after only four innings and Jay's scratches only four singles off of pitcher Rett Richey.  Ben Peden triples and hits four doubles in game two, getting eight RBI, the second most of his 16 year career.  He finishes the year with 969 career hits, 45 shy of the team record.

November 20

The season ends with a double forfeit win over Dudley's Sports Cardiac Cavs.  The team has a fun dinner at our sponsor of 30 years, Crystal City Sports Pub. There, Joe Coopersmith, who is leaving town after only one year on the team, is provided with a microphone and does his first comic stand-up routine before the bemused Tools and other patrons.  A memorable way to end a year.
